Hackers Find New Target as Hoteliers Work From home During COVID-19 Outbreak

At this time of great concern the mass migration to remote work and social distancing is possibly the best thing we can do to encourage the safety of our coworkers and our customers. Remote access has been long pursued as a relatively low cost measure for travelling staff to easily connect with company resources quickly.

Improved connectivity and better applications have driven remote work to be a crucial aspect of many businesses today. That being said, the biggest criticisms of remote work access is that it is highly insecure if not administered without professionals.

In an interview with The Hill, cybersecurity professional & CCO of Cyber Black Inc., Tom Kellermann commented that “There are nation-states that are actively taking advantage of the situation, particularly our Cold War adversaries, and we need to be keenly aware that they are aware of the lack of security that is presented by everyone telecommuting”.

“Government officials in the United States, Britain and elsewhere have issued warnings about the dangers of a newly remote workforce, while tech companies are seeing surges in requests to help secure out-of-office employees. At Cisco Systems Inc, for example, the number of requests for security support to support remote workforces have jumped 10-fold in the last few weeks.”

It’s worrying to know that the WHO has already been breached during this time of peril, by people who we can term nothing less than the “worst of humankind”. The breach was identified by information security lawyer Alexander Urbelis, he identified that “the (hackers) group replicated a portal used by remote WHO employees that he describes as “very, very convincing.”

The FBI has already alerted businesses in a press release that they have noticed several CDC email scams, phishing emails, and counterfeit treatment emails that cybercriminals are using to target ordinary people.

Anthony Schoettle of the Indianapolis Business Journal writes in his March 13 article that “Only half of small business owners have updated their companies’ remote-work security guidelines in the past year, a recent Nationwide Insurance survey of 400 small-business owners concluded. Of those surveyed, only 4% had employed all of the cybersecurity best practices and recommendations from the U.S. Small Business Administration.”
